50% added value if you can talk to people?

Warren Buffett the iconic investor, worth 73.9Billion (lolwhat) once stated to a group of students at Columbia University in 2009:

Now you can improve your value by 50 percent just by learning communication skills – public speaking.

But why do some get crippling fear when talking in front of people?

do you feel nervous? Palms are sweaty? knees weak, arms are heavy?… mom’s spaghetti.

The fear is called Glossophobia

The problem is, the standing up part. Once you stand up above your audience, your brain is telling you to sit down. A basic human instinct is to conform, not to stand out, to get back in line. Rejoin the pack, but by standing above them – well your prehistoric brain doesn’t like that, no offence.

your brain handles embarrasment by stopping the suitation before it begins. This is reinforced by the things we watch, the funny sitcoms we watch of people fumbling speeches, this is the perspective we get.

I use perspective loosely because it’s false. Its like your brain telling you that you can’t have ice cream because you will get brain freeze before it even touches your tongue. god dammit I want that ice cream (with strawberry sprinkles)
Its time to literally take a stand, and work on the art of oratory. The ability to create a fantastic speech. It won’t just prove effective when you get to a senior level in business but it will make you more impactful, interesting and inspiring amongst your peers. Look at some of your friends, who’s a good story teller?

Public speaking, is crucial if you want to become an effective leader you need to be able to deliver thought provoking, inspiring and imaginative speeches. The digital world has not and will not change that.

How you can apply this to YOU.

The world of digital has caused us all to become very segmented, like can you even go a whole day without your phone now? That’s besides the point.. what I’m really getting at is, even though the ‘medium’ has changed the art of speaking has not. Being able to convince or engage with an audience by it through digital means or video, physical means it hasn’t changed. This is a top quality of a leader, being able to inspire, motivate and deliver a clear vision.

The reason fears are so difficult to break or beat is because nobody can really truly understand them other than you. With this in mind, reflect, have a serious think about what the root cause of this is.

What is the underlying belief?

Scared of making a tit of yourself? What if you come across the wrong way? What about if nobody laughs/ finds it interesting (put in your own excuse)

Great – but stop lying to yourself, lets go deeper

One of the reasons why you can’t overcome your feel is because you need people to like you. You crave attention due to our human nature and you need people to like you, oh god, what if they don’t?

Look, it’s all individual I have already said that, but understanding fears, beliefs and challenging them is how you beat them. Why do so many successful people mediate / reflect and write journals? constant review, constant development and if you want to become the best version of yourself. get.on.it.

Before you go
